principles to the issues faced by the human resource manager in<br />

This course examines various theories and methods that can be used to<br />

resolve organizational dilemmas involving ethical behavior. Application <strong>of</strong><br />

philosophical principles and managerial techniques to the ambiguous<br />

and ethical issues facing today's organizations domestically and<br />

internationally is emphasized. <strong>Student</strong>s will develop skills necessary to<br />

Public Safety Capstone (3 cr.)<br />

Prerequisite: All other required coursework<br />

In this course students integrate public safety knowledge, skills and tools<br />

developed in previous public safety and management courses. It<br />

emphasizes critical analysis <strong>of</strong> current topics and trends. It includes a<br />

major research paper and presentation on a public safety topic <strong>of</strong> the<br />

student’s choice.<br />

Management Development (2 cr.)<br />

Prerequisite: <strong>Student</strong>s with less than five years <strong>of</strong> experience are<br />

required to take GM599.<br />

This course provides an opportunity for students to apply management<br />

theory to the everyday practice <strong>of</strong> management. Self-assessments,<br />

including management style assessments, are used to help students<br />

understand more clearly their leadership style, as well as the<br />

implications for various management responsibilities. The approach to<br />

this applied course includes group activities and projects to assist<br />

students in skill building.<br />

Creative Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking (2 cr.)<br />

This course gives students the opportunity to learn and practice higher<br />

level thinking skills such as curiosity and imagination, divergent thinking,<br />

idea generation, creative problem-solving, evaluation, synthesis, critical<br />

thinking and analysis. <strong>Student</strong>s develop strategies to search for<br />

challenges, identify problems, produce creative ideas, research solutions,<br />

design innovative applications and build a case for the solution.<br />

This course introduces electronic databases, the internet, and print<br />

materials relevant to the research process and how to use them. It<br />

examines how to evaluate information retrieved from those resources<br />

and how to integrate that information into various research projects. How<br />

information is created and transformed through social, political,<br />

economic, and cultural forces is discussed. This course also explores the<br />

legal and ethical issues surrounding the use <strong>of</strong> information in personal,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional, and academic life<br />

This course facilitates learning and applying the principles and tools <strong>of</strong><br />

successful project management in organizations. It examines how a<br />

successful project manager controls company resources within the limits<br />

<strong>of</strong> time, cost and performance.<br />

Quantitative Methods (3 cr.)<br />

This course focuses on statistical analysis <strong>of</strong> data for pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

applications or research with an emphasis on quantitative<br />

methodologies. The course covers populations, sample selection, and<br />

descriptive and inferential statistics. Significance, Chi Square,<br />

correlations, analysis <strong>of</strong> variance and simple regression, and concepts <strong>of</strong><br />

reliability, validity and levels <strong>of</strong> measurement are addressed.<br />

This course examines economics and its effect on business and social<br />

environments. The course uses micro and macro theory and<br />

environmental scanning techniques to look at a variety <strong>of</strong> domestic and<br />

Legal Issues for Managers (2 cr.)<br />

This course is an overview <strong>of</strong> the American legal system and its impact<br />

on organizational decision-making in this country and around the world.<br />

It emphasizes legal issue spotting in management primarily in the areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> torts, contracts, employment and discrimination law. In addition, this<br />

course surveys current trends and issues in business law and the impact<br />

they have on today’s society<br />

Financial Management (3 cr.)<br />

This course introduces, discusses and analyzes financial issues facing<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>it, not-for-pr<strong>of</strong>it and governmental organizations in today's domestic<br />

and global business environment. The course provides the general<br />

manager with an ethical financial manager's perspective by way <strong>of</strong><br />

examination <strong>of</strong> various financial areas including: types <strong>of</strong> organizations,<br />

sources <strong>of</strong> capital, investment in the US and in foreign countries, asset<br />

management, time value <strong>of</strong> money, international payments and foreign<br />

exchange rates, trade theory and policy, and financial statement analysis.<br />

This course provides an overview <strong>of</strong> planning and managing technology<br />

and information flow in organizations. It addresses present and future<br />
