Marriage and Family Therapy Practicum I (2 cr.)<br />

Prerequisites: All program course requirements except MFT632,<br />

MFT635 and MFT683.<br />

Marriage and Family Therapy Practicum II (2 cr.)<br />

Prerequisite: MFT 670<br />

MFT672<br />

Marriage and Family Therapy Practicum III (2 cr.)<br />

Prerequisites: MFT670 and MFT671<br />

<strong>Student</strong>s unable to complete the required 300 hours <strong>of</strong> client contact in<br />

two semesters <strong>of</strong> practicum may register for this course. <strong>Student</strong>s<br />

continue to take the practicum supervision seminar for each semester<br />

needed to complete the hours. This course is P/NC.<br />

MFT673<br />

Marriage and Family Therapy Practicum IV (2 cr.)<br />

Prerequisites: MFT670, MFT671, and MFT672<br />

<strong>Student</strong>s unable to complete the required 300 hours <strong>of</strong> client contact in<br />

two semesters <strong>of</strong> practicum may register for this course. <strong>Student</strong>s<br />

continue to take the practicum supervision seminar for each semester<br />

needed to complete the hours. This course is P/NC.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

A master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, for which<br />

applicants maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average, is required for<br />

admission. In addition, the applicant must have completed the graduate<br />

courses listed below. These courses may have been completed as part<br />

<strong>of</strong> a master’s degree or doctoral program, or may be taken separately at<br />

a regionally accredited institution <strong>of</strong> higher education.<br />

Applicants must have coursework in the following areas:<br />

1. Three courses (nine semester credits) in human development,<br />

human behavior, personality theory, human sexuality,<br />

psychopathology, and behavior pathology.<br />

Application Process<br />

Applicants must submit:<br />

1. Completed application form with the nonrefundable application fee<br />

(fee not required for alumni or students seeking readmission or<br />

veterans and active military personnel) and,<br />

2. An <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript issued to <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />

from the institution posting the applicant’s completed bachelor’s<br />

degree and other relevant transcripts documenting program prerequisites<br />

and potential transfer credits. (An <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript is one<br />

that is sent or carried to the university in an envelope sealed by the<br />

granting university. Transcripts from countries other than the U.S.<br />

must be evaluated by a university accepted evaluation source, such<br />

as World Education Services, www.wes.org, or Educational<br />

Credential Evaluators, www.ece.org, and be deemed equivalent to<br />

accredited U.S. university standards.) and,<br />

3. A personal statement which includes:<br />

a. brief description <strong>of</strong> the applicant’s background, training, and<br />

experience and,<br />

b. statement indicating the career goals <strong>of</strong> the applicant and his or<br />

her reasons for seeking admission to the program and,<br />

c. description <strong>of</strong> the areas the applicant considers to be his or her<br />

strengths and areas in which the applicant wishes to develop<br />

greater strengths and abilities and,<br />

d. personal information the applicant wishes to share.<br />

4. Letter(s) <strong>of</strong> recommendation that verify pr<strong>of</strong>essional and/or volunteer<br />

experience and academic ability and,<br />

5. A current résumé listing educational background and work<br />

experience and,<br />

6. All applicants must complete an interview with a program<br />

administrator.<br />

Please Note: Application materials should be sent to the attention <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> Admission on the Twin Cities campus.<br />

2. One course (three semester credits) in marital and family therapy<br />

covering marital and family communication, family psychology, family<br />

therapy, methods <strong>of</strong> intervention, family assessment, sex therapy,<br />

major theories <strong>of</strong> marital and family therapy such as structural,<br />

strategic, transgenerational, experiential, object relations, contextual<br />

and systemic therapy.<br />

3. One course (three semester credits) in research covering design,<br />

methods, statistics, and special issues in research in marital and<br />

family studies or a related field.<br />

An applicant who is lacking one or more <strong>of</strong> these courses may apply to<br />

be admitted as provisional and take courses in the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in<br />

Marriage and Family Therapy or Counseling and Psychological Services<br />

programs.
