<strong>Student</strong> Services<br />
New <strong>Student</strong> Orientation — Twin Cities<br />
Campus<br />
New student orientation for the Twin Cities campus is held prior to the<br />
beginning <strong>of</strong> each semester. This is an opportunity to become<br />
acquainted with the university and the services available to students. All<br />
new students are strongly encouraged, and in some programs required,<br />
to attend the orientation session for their programs.<br />
New <strong>Student</strong> Orientation — Winona Campus<br />
New student orientations for graduate students on the Winona campus<br />
are scheduled by program.<br />
New <strong>Student</strong> Orientation — Rochester<br />
Center<br />
New student orientation for the Rochester center is held each semester,<br />
during the first scheduled week <strong>of</strong> class. This is an opportunity to<br />
become acquainted with the university and the services available to<br />
students. All new students are strongly encouraged, and in some<br />
programs required, to attend the orientation session for their programs.<br />
Writing Center — Twin Cities Campus<br />
Purpose and Services<br />
The purpose <strong>of</strong> the Twin Cities Campus Writing Center is to provide<br />
instructional support for academic writing. This purpose is addressed in<br />
a variety <strong>of</strong> ways.<br />
Individual Conferences<br />
The aim <strong>of</strong> the Writing Center staff is to develop students’ writing ability,<br />
not simply “fix” papers. In a free one-on-one conference, a writing<br />
consultant meets with a student to analyze and respond to his or her<br />
writing. A student computer is available in the Writing Center so that<br />
students can revise their papers on the spot. The Writing Center <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
lessons on word processing as well as APA and AMA styles.<br />
Drop-ins are welcomed if time allows, but an advance appointment will<br />
ensure that a staff member is ready and available to help when a student<br />
arrives.<br />
Online Services<br />
The online Writing Center provides another means <strong>of</strong> access for<br />
students, particularly those whose classes meet at the university’s <strong>of</strong>f<br />
campus sites. The online Writing Center features a menu <strong>of</strong> services,<br />
including grammar and rhetorical guides, punctuation and spelling rules,<br />
information on APA and MLA styles, links to other university Writing<br />
Centers, and links for students whose native language is not English.<br />
The online Writing Center is available twenty-four hours a day at<br />
www.smumn.edu/tcwrite.<br />
E-mail<br />
<strong>Student</strong>s can submit papers as e-mail attachments. A member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Writing Center staff will read and respond to the paper by e-mail or set<br />
up a telephone conference with the student within a day or two.<br />
Courses and Workshops<br />
Each term the Writing Center <strong>of</strong>fers workshops and elective writing<br />
courses that help develop skills for college writing. These courses and<br />
workshops are described at the Writing Center’s website,<br />
www.smumn.edu/tcwrite.<br />
Booklets<br />
<strong>Student</strong>s can purchase the Writing Center booklet Introduction to APA<br />
Style and Other Writing Tips in the campus bookstore. The booklet is an<br />
introduction and guide to the APA manual and provides materials to<br />
supplement the manual. Undergraduates are required to purchase a<br />
booklet entitled Undergraduate Writing Style for Bachelor Completion<br />
Programs.<br />
Editing Referral<br />
When a doctoral student’s work is ready for editing, the Writing Center<br />
director can, upon request, refer that student to a fee-based pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
editor <strong>of</strong>f-campus.<br />
Policies<br />
Consultations are limited to 1.5 hours per student per week, and two<br />
consultations per paper. <strong>Student</strong>s must take an active part in the<br />
consultation. Writing Center staff do not pro<strong>of</strong>read or edit for students.<br />
<strong>Student</strong>s must show documentation for works consulted.<br />

Writing Center — Winona Campus<br />
The Winona campus Writing Center is located in Griffin Hall, Office #78,<br />
and is accessible through the lower level <strong>of</strong> <strong>Saint</strong> <strong>Mary's</strong> Hall. Offering<br />
services for undergraduate and graduate students, you may make an<br />
appointment by calling (800) 635-5987 Ext. 1432. The Winona Campus<br />
Writing Center operates on the undergraduate College schedule.<br />
Support Services for Persons with<br />
Disabilities<br />
<strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> complies with applicable federal,<br />
state, and local laws concerning access to educational benefits and<br />
programs. For the purposes <strong>of</strong> this policy, a student with a disability is<br />
one who:<br />
1. Has a physical or mental impairment that materially or substantially<br />
limits a major life activity and,<br />
2. Has a record <strong>of</strong> such an impairment and,<br />
3. Is regarded as having such an impairment.<br />
A student with a disability who requests academic assistance must<br />
provide pr<strong>of</strong>essionally recognized documentation <strong>of</strong> the disability and the<br />
need for services requested. <strong>Student</strong>s are responsible for furnishing<br />
current documentation <strong>of</strong> their disability to the disability coordinator or<br />
dean. These diagnostic reports should be within three years <strong>of</strong> the<br />
request for service and should be completed by a physician or other<br />
licensed practitioner. Determination <strong>of</strong> eligibility for academic support<br />
services will be made by the disability services coordinator or dean.<br />
