Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in Nursing<br />

The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in Nursing degree completion program is<br />

designed for registered nurses looking to advance their pr<strong>of</strong>essional role<br />

in today’s diverse healthcare field. This program expands the student’s<br />

current knowledge and experience with a strong emphasis on the<br />

science <strong>of</strong> nursing. Courses are designed to develop critical thinking,<br />

evidence-based nursing practices, and integrative scientific thought<br />

combined with an ethical patient-centered approach to nursing in diverse<br />

communities.<br />

Program Outcomes<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in Nursing program are expected<br />

to be able to do the following:<br />

1. Provide quality nursing care through the implementation <strong>of</strong> evidencebased<br />

practice to diverse patients and families.<br />

2. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in a healthcare setting.<br />

3. Manage organizational processes and supervise personnel in a<br />

healthcare setting.<br />

4. Incorporate concepts <strong>of</strong> scientific principles associated with nursing<br />

care.<br />

5. Interact effectively with diverse populations.<br />

6. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.<br />

7. Facilitate teams, collaboration, and mentoring amongst health<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

8. Demonstrate an understanding and sensitivity to family dynamics<br />

associated with health care and patient education.<br />

9. Demonstrate an understanding <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> health care regulation.<br />

10. Incorporate ethical behavior into daily nursing practice.<br />

11. Locate and interpret quality research and apply basic analytical skills<br />

to interpret data related to heath care.<br />

12. Apply educational strategies to teach patients and colleagues in a<br />

health care setting.<br />

13. Demonstrate the general education competencies required for<br />

graduation.<br />

Degree Requirements<br />

A minimum <strong>of</strong> 122 credits is required for graduation with a bachelor or<br />

science degree from <strong>Saint</strong> Mary’s <strong>University</strong>. All students must meet the<br />

general education credit requirements. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 51 credits is<br />

required to complete the B.S. in Nursing.<br />

Integrated Science for Nursing (3 cr.)<br />

This course provides an advanced interdisciplinary study <strong>of</strong> applied<br />

mathematics, chemistry, biological sciences, and physics related to<br />

modern nursing practice. Concepts related to human health in various<br />

stages <strong>of</strong> the human life cycle are explored and integrated into the<br />

nursing knowledge base.
