11. “Hotspots” were first identified by Norman Myers in 1988. He used this concept <strong>for</strong> ten tropical <strong>for</strong>ests with<br />

exceptional endemic plants and serious threat of habitat loss. Myers added eight more hotspots in 1990, including<br />

four <strong>Mediterranean</strong>-type ecosystems. Conservation International <strong>work</strong>ed on Myers’ hotspots in 1989 and 1996,<br />

then decided to reassess this concept. In a 1999 global review, hundreds of scientists and environmentalists identified<br />
