Camels can go without water; how far can you go without words?<br />

This activity involves creativity and an extended role-play, simulating<br />

a meeting between “anthropologists” and Bedouins.<br />

Preparation<br />

Do a little basic research about Bedouin culture, using the Internet or a library.<br />

Find pictures of Bedouins, their tents and camels, and other characteristic<br />

images; make copies <strong>for</strong> the group of participants that will play the Bedouins.<br />

Make copies of the handouts, one <strong>for</strong> every two participants.<br />

Gather together materials and equipment <strong>for</strong> use in the role play.<br />

A large space <strong>for</strong> the role play<br />

A second room so the two groups can prepare separately<br />

Cloth <strong>for</strong> a tent (this can be simulated, no need <strong>for</strong> a real one!), mats, long robes<br />

and scarves <strong>for</strong> the Bedouin<br />

Scraps of cloth, paper, card and junk that can be used to make camels’ noses,<br />

ears, eyelashes, feet and humps<br />

Sticks to represent a fire, plus cooking pots, tea cups and water jug<br />

Bedouin music/stories or poetry<br />
