<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wilmington</strong><br />

vi. Neighborhood Commercial Use (NC) signs: Signs permitted in<br />

the Neighborhood Retail Use are as follows:<br />

1. External illumination: External illumination, if used, shall<br />

not be blinking, fluctuating or moving.<br />

2. Free standing signs:<br />

a. Only two (2) free standing signs shall be allowed, one<br />

at the access from the arterial and one at the access<br />

from the collector street.<br />

b. Height: Maximum five (5) feet.<br />

c. Area <strong>of</strong> sign: Maximum thirty-five (35) square feet.<br />

d. Material: Material shall be compatible with the<br />

surrounding neighborhood structures.<br />

3. Wall signs:<br />

a. These signs shall only be externally illuminated.<br />

b. Number <strong>of</strong> signs: Two (2) wall signs are allowed per<br />

occupancy - one (1) on the front elevation and (1) one<br />

on the rear elevation <strong>of</strong> the structure.<br />

Additionally, an awning shall be allowed with lettering<br />

no larger than twelve (12) inches in height.<br />

c. Materials: Materials shall be compatible with the<br />

surrounding neighborhood structures.<br />

d. Area <strong>of</strong> signs:<br />

i. Front elevation: Any business shall be permitted<br />

one (1) square foot <strong>of</strong> sign surface area for each<br />

linear foot <strong>of</strong> building frontage.<br />

ii. Rear elevation: Any business shall be permitted<br />

one-half (1/2) square foot <strong>of</strong> sign surface area for<br />

each linear foot <strong>of</strong> building frontage.<br />

iii. Awning and under-canopy signs shall have a<br />

minimum clearing <strong>of</strong> nine (9) feet over any<br />

pedestrian area.<br />

iv. All internal signage and/or street signage shall be<br />

consistent with the character <strong>of</strong> the neighborhood.<br />

v. Signage within the Neighborhood Retail Use shall<br />

be reviewed by the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wilmington</strong> planning<br />

staff for compliance with these <strong>regulations</strong>.<br />

(4) Yard requirement:<br />

a. Front yard requirement. The minimum depth <strong>of</strong> any front yard shall be<br />

no less than the average front yard depth created by existing structures<br />

in the block fronting the same street. If there are no structures located<br />

in the block fronting the same street, the front yard shall be no less<br />

than fifteen (15) measured from the property line.<br />

b. Rear yard required. The rear yard shall have depth <strong>of</strong> no less than<br />

twenty (20) feet.<br />
