<strong>Oil</strong>field or Industrial Waste Fluid (Class I) Disposal<br />
The following are further requirements pertaining to Class I disposal only. Note that<br />
generally you must obtain a surface facility approval from the ERCB Facilities Waste<br />
Management Section <strong>and</strong>/or Alberta Environment be<strong>for</strong>e the ERCB may issue a waste<br />
disposal well approval. For more in<strong>for</strong>mation on waste facility applications, see ERCB<br />
<strong>Directive</strong> 058. You may obtain in<strong>for</strong>mation on industrial waste facilities applications from the<br />
appropriate Alberta Environmental Corporate Regional office.<br />
Requirements<br />
1) Evidence of notification to <strong>and</strong> consent from<br />
the surface owner <strong>and</strong>/or occupant within a<br />
radius of 0.5 km from the proposed disposal<br />
well.<br />
Comments<br />
In view of the possible hazardous nature of<br />
waste disposal fluids, extra precautions are<br />
taken to ensure containment.<br />
2) Evidence of notification to <strong>and</strong> consent from<br />
potentially adversely affected parties (unit<br />
operators, approval holders, well licensees,<br />
mineral lessees, <strong>and</strong>/or mineral lessors)<br />
within a 1.6 km radius of the proposed<br />
disposal well.<br />
If a pool is subject to unit operations or other<br />
approvals, in most cases you may notify the<br />
unit operator or approval holder on<br />
behalf of the relevant group having an<br />
interest in the pool. Otherwise, you should<br />
normally notify individual well licensees.<br />
3) Evidence of your right to dispose into the<br />
proposed zone.<br />
Proof of the right to dispose in a <strong>for</strong>mation is<br />
as follows:<br />
• unleased Crown l<strong>and</strong>—a letter of consent<br />
from the Crown,<br />
• Freehold lease l<strong>and</strong>—consent from the<br />
Freehold mineral holder, <strong>and</strong><br />
• leased by other than the applicant—a letter<br />
of consent from the lease holder.<br />
4) A discussion of the geological setting of the<br />
proposed disposal zone, including the<br />
integrity of the base <strong>and</strong> caprock <strong>and</strong> the<br />
stratification within the reservoir <strong>and</strong><br />
reservoir parameters, giving vertical <strong>and</strong><br />
horizontal permeabilities, thickness, <strong>and</strong><br />
areal extent.<br />
