Maximizing the uniformity <strong>of</strong> water application is one <strong>of</strong> the easier ways to save water, at<br />

the farm level, too frequently forgotten. The evaluation <strong>of</strong> the emission uniformity <strong>of</strong> the drip<br />

system should be done periodically. In a study conducted by Orgaz et al, 1986, thirty drip systems<br />

were evaluated in the Almeria greenhouse industry; the results showed that the uniformity<br />

coefficient (UC) varied between 51 <strong>and</strong> 93%, the average UC being 76%. And only 4% <strong>of</strong> the<br />

systems had excellent uniformity while UC was unacceptable in 20% <strong>of</strong> them. B) Applied water<br />

was considered excessive in 50% <strong>of</strong> the farms studied.<br />

<strong>Protected</strong> cultivation improves the water productivity due to the ET reduction <strong>and</strong> larger<br />

outputs <strong>of</strong> protected growing (Stanghellini, 1993). Drip irrigation also increases the water<br />

productivity, relative to conventional irrigation in greenhouses. The 20 kg <strong>of</strong> yield per cubic meter<br />

<strong>of</strong> applied water quantified in open field tomato growing in the Mediterranean area, can be<br />

increased to 33 kg per m 3 in unheated plastic house (Castilla et al, 1990-C), far from the 65- kg per<br />

m 3 obtained in sophisticated greenhouses, with soilless culture <strong>and</strong> very long cycles, in Holl<strong>and</strong><br />

(Stanghellini, 1994).<br />

The use <strong>of</strong> recirculating soilless culture can improve the water productivity but the poor<br />

quality <strong>of</strong> water, the high cost <strong>of</strong> the equipment (for quantifying the ion concentration <strong>and</strong><br />

disinfecting the re circulating solution) <strong>and</strong> the absence <strong>of</strong> proper information, at the farm level,<br />

limits its use. Table 2 summarizes the economic yields per cubic meter <strong>of</strong> applied water (water<br />

productivity) in commercial plastic houses in the Almeria area (Spain). In some cases, the<br />

agronomic water use efficiency (water productivity) is lower in soilless culture than in soil-grown<br />

crops (Table 2), showing the need <strong>of</strong> applied research on this subject.<br />

A study conducted at PFDC, GBPUA&T, Pantnagar, India on tensiometer based drip<br />

irrigation <strong>and</strong> fertigation scheduling on capsicum <strong>under</strong> polyhouse. In Double Span Naturally<br />

Ventilated Polyhouse (DS NVPH), the water use efficiency was observed maximum in the<br />
