Scope <strong>of</strong> biological control<br />

A potent alternative to chemical control is biological control which is defined as the use <strong>of</strong><br />

living organisms to control pests. These may be Predators, parasites, parasitoids, pathogens or<br />

naturally competitive organisms.<br />

Biological control is a natural phenomenon <strong>of</strong> pest suppression by natural enemies The<br />

populations <strong>of</strong> natural enemies <strong>and</strong> their host <strong>and</strong> prey tend to maintain an equilibrium in nature<br />

once this equilibrium is broken phytophagus insects <strong>and</strong> mites tend to reach high densities<br />

causing grevious losses to the farmers Although the use <strong>of</strong> chemical pesticides can present high<br />

immediate effectiveness they also present collateral effects. Insecticides <strong>and</strong> miticides besides<br />

being toxic for pest organisms are toxic to natural enemies, man <strong>and</strong> domestic animals.<br />

The main reason behind using biological control methods were the concerns about risk <strong>of</strong><br />

chemicals for environment <strong>and</strong> human health. They mainly target the specific pest,may work at a<br />
