3. Again, take clifFwort,' some men call it foxes cliff",<br />

some riverwort, <strong>and</strong> let it be wrought past midsummer,<br />

seethe it in water till the third part <strong>of</strong> the wash be<br />

<strong>of</strong>f", give it thrice a day to be drunk.<br />

4. For host again, take sea mint, boil it in ale,<br />

give to drink. Again, take black alder rendered <strong>and</strong><br />

purified, boil it in ale, give it to be drunk.<br />

5. Again, take hove," yarrow, red nettle,"^ boil them<br />

in milk. Again, take against host <strong>and</strong> against breast<br />

anguish,* a good portion <strong>of</strong> slary,^ add a bowl full <strong>of</strong><br />

wine, boil away a third part on the wort ; let the<br />

patient sup it at night fasting.<br />

6. Again, take marrubium, boil it in ale, add pepper.<br />

Again, for breast anguish, if a man have a dry host,<br />

take a thin slice <strong>of</strong> lard, lay it on a hot stone, shed<br />

cummin on it, set it on a horn,*^ let the p)('dient drink<br />

in<br />

the smoke.<br />

7. For a dry cough again, take elecampane <strong>and</strong><br />

comfi'ey ; let the 'patient eat them in virgin honey.<br />

XVI.<br />

1. For acute pain in the breast, take the little<br />

centaury <strong>and</strong> cummin, boil in clear ale, let the patient<br />

sip <strong>and</strong> drink. Again, take pennyroyal <strong>and</strong> cockle,<br />

artichoke, let him boil in clear ale, let him drink a<br />

cup fall at night fasting.<br />

2. Boil in ale for the same, fennel, marrubium,<br />

betony, <strong>and</strong> let the patient drink. For pain in the<br />

breast, take rue, /lorehound <strong>and</strong> abrotanon,'^ rub to-<br />
