st<strong>and</strong> thus together for three nights ;<br />

after that seethe<br />

the roots somewhat in the vinegar, <strong>and</strong> wring them<br />

clean from the vinegar. Then put into the vinegar<br />

some honey with the vinegar ; then put a good deal<br />

<strong>of</strong> aloes therein, so much as may weigh an ounce or<br />

more, <strong>and</strong> as much more <strong>of</strong> mastic <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> ammi, as<br />

a foreign wort liight ; or asarabacca ;<br />

put in less <strong>of</strong><br />

them, mingle, however, all together, <strong>and</strong> then give him<br />

three spoon measures. Do this against burning <strong>of</strong> the<br />

maw <strong>and</strong> thirst ; mingle lukewarm water with the best<br />

oil, give to drink, that checketh the thirst.<br />

For irritation <strong>of</strong> the maw when fJ/c man through the<br />

mouth has l)itter breaking or belching, or there is an<br />

ill lymph in his stomach ;<br />

take <strong>of</strong> pepper as much as one<br />

coin may weigh, <strong>of</strong> seed <strong>of</strong> dill as much as may weigh<br />

four coin, as much besides <strong>of</strong> cummin, rub all fine <strong>and</strong><br />

administer in wine a spoon full when the man willeth<br />

to go to sleep. The swelling <strong>of</strong> the maw <strong>and</strong> the heat<br />

<strong>of</strong> the puffing up cometli from the black flegms ; but<br />

then take sponges, put them into sharp vinegar, wet<br />

it thoroughly, lay it over the maw, when it is such.<br />

After that, if it feel not this, or he insensible io these<br />

remedies, lay on some other applications, stronger <strong>and</strong><br />

more austere, such as is copperas mingled with honey,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the like <strong>of</strong> that as leeches know.<br />
