Sir J. E. Smith turns it Friclily Lettuce<br />

Sir W. Hooker says it is found on waste<br />

ground in Cambridgeshire, at Southend,<br />

Essex, <strong>and</strong> formerly near Islington. He<br />

adds that the garden lettuce, L. sativa, is<br />

not a native <strong>of</strong> this country. " Lactvica,<br />

" letuse, slepewort, idem ; domestica et<br />

" campestris." Also " Lactuca agrestis,<br />

" rostrum porcinum . mylk thistell." MS.<br />

Bodl. 536, fol. 17. The word purpure<br />

was in <strong>early</strong> times an exact repetition<br />

<strong>of</strong> purpureus, which the Romans applied<br />

to any bright colour. The flower <strong>of</strong><br />

Lactuca scariola is yellow.<br />

Lactuca silvatica<br />

has yellow rays in MS. Bodl. 130,<br />

but the leaves are too like sword blades.<br />

It is there glossed Suge Jhiftel, that is,<br />

sow thistle. " Scarola . endiua . tx°nna<br />

() lactuca agrestis," Gl. M. The<br />

drawing in MS. T is an exact representation<br />

<strong>of</strong> i. scaro7a, glossed Branca vrsina,<br />

to which there is resemblance.<br />

ramosus. In lib. xxxiii., liii. Woodr<strong>of</strong>fe<br />

is astula regia, that is hastula regia, the<br />

royal sceptre, <strong>and</strong> all accounts agree that<br />

it is a kind <strong>of</strong> onion, an asfodelaceous<br />

plant, with a vast number <strong>of</strong> bulbs,<br />

" Lxxx. simul accvvatis sa»pe bulbis,"<br />

" Plinius, xxi. 68 ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> though it has<br />

" transfeiTcd its name to the daffodil,<br />

" yet not that plant. Narcissus pseudo-<br />

but the flower is gone ; the drawing, as<br />

much as remains, matches that in Fuchsius,<br />
