Work a good ear salve thini ; the netherward part<br />

part <strong>of</strong> garden liove, leaves <strong>of</strong> cel<strong>and</strong>ine, garlic,<br />

cropleek<br />

put tlumi into wine or vinegar, "wi'ing them<br />

through a coloured cloth into the ear; let tJtc liquor<br />

st<strong>and</strong> for three nights Ijelbre thou ap[)ly it. Again,<br />

take cropleek <strong>and</strong> sedum, pound them, add a little<br />

wine, <strong>and</strong> wring into the ear, it will soon be well<br />

with it.<br />

Ixi.<br />

Work thus a salve against the elfin race <strong>and</strong> nocturnal<br />

gohliii visitors, <strong>and</strong> for the women with whom the<br />

devil liath carnal conunerce ; take the ewe hop plant,<br />

probably the female hop plant, wormwood, bishopwort,<br />

lupin, ashthroat, henbane, liarewort, vipers bugloss,<br />

heathberry plants, cropleek, garlic, grains <strong>of</strong> hedgerife,<br />

githrife, fennel<br />

put these worts into a vessel, set<br />

tkeini under the altar, sing over them nine masses,<br />

boil tliG'in in butter <strong>and</strong> sheeps grease, add much holy<br />

salt, strain through a clotli, throw the worts into running<br />

water. If any ill tempting occur to a man, or<br />

an elf or goblin night visitors come, smear his forehead<br />

with this salve, <strong>and</strong> put it on liis eyes, <strong>and</strong> where his<br />

body is sore, <strong>and</strong> cense him with incense, <strong>and</strong> sign<br />

him frequently with the sign <strong>of</strong> the cross ; his condition<br />

Avill soon be better.<br />

Ixii.<br />

Against elf disease ;<br />

take bishoj)wort, fennel, lupin,<br />

the lower part <strong>of</strong> enchanters nightshade, <strong>and</strong> moss or<br />

lichen from the hallowed sign <strong>of</strong> Christ, <strong>and</strong> incense,<br />

uf each a h<strong>and</strong> full ; bind all the worts in a cloth, dip<br />

it thrice in hallowed font water, have sung over
