next make a brewit <strong>of</strong> tliein in the butter, <strong>and</strong> shake Book i.<br />

it well up without fire, <strong>and</strong> add pepper, then let the<br />

patient eat first the brewit at night fasting. Further<br />

after that let him drink the draught <strong>and</strong> none other<br />

liquid for ten nights, for thirty if he can endure it<br />

then take mistletoe<br />

<strong>of</strong> the oak, beat it small <strong>and</strong> dry it,<br />

<strong>and</strong> rub down to meal, then weigh it against one<br />

penny, put that into the best wine ; let the sufferer<br />

drink this accordingly for nine days, <strong>and</strong> let him eat<br />

neither new cheese, nor fresh goose, nor fresh eel, nor<br />

fresh pig, nor augbt <strong>of</strong> that which cometh <strong>of</strong> a decoction,<br />

nor fishes without shells, nor web footed fowls ; if he<br />

eat any <strong>of</strong> these, let it be salted, <strong>and</strong> by no means<br />

let him drink beer, <strong>and</strong> wine <strong>and</strong> ale moderately. If<br />

this leechdom be followed then shall the man be hole.<br />

Against circle addle or shingles, take dock that will<br />

swim, beat it very small, boil in old inspissated wine a<br />

good h<strong>and</strong>ful, then remove the worts, afterwards add<br />

another h<strong>and</strong>ful <strong>of</strong> the same wort, boil again thoroughly,<br />

then remove the worts ; then take brimstone, beat<br />

it very small, then apply the salve, so that it may<br />

be as thick as brewit, then smear the specks with<br />

the salve till it be well with him, the patient.<br />

In case that a man may not retain his urine <strong>and</strong> have<br />

not control over it, burn to ashes claws <strong>of</strong> a boar or<br />

<strong>of</strong> another swine, then shed the ashes on the sick mans<br />

drink. Again, burn to ashes the bladder <strong>of</strong> an unprolific,<br />

that is a gelt, swine, put it into wine, administer<br />

it to drink. For the same, fry a goats bladder, give<br />

it to the man to eat ; some, when so fried, reduce it<br />

to dust, <strong>and</strong> %vhen shed into wine, give it to the men<br />

to drink, if they be without fever. Again, if a man<br />

take <strong>of</strong> cummin as much as thou<br />

may not pass water,<br />

mayst lift with three fingers, triturate it, <strong>and</strong> add
