a night. A wound salve : the lichen <strong>of</strong> hazel, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

netherward part <strong>of</strong> holly rind <strong>and</strong> githrife, pound the<br />

worts very well, mingle with butter, seethe thoroughly,<br />

skim <strong>of</strong>f the foam, strain through a cloth very<br />

clean ;<br />

if the edges <strong>of</strong> the wound are too high,^ run<br />

them round with a hot iron very lightly, so that<br />

the skin may whiten.<br />

9. A wound salve : pound very thoroughly, goutweed,<br />

mingle with butter, seethe thoroughl}^, <strong>and</strong> boil,<br />

<strong>and</strong> wring through a cloth, skim <strong>of</strong>f the foam, salt it<br />

very well ; if the wound get foul, chew strailwort upon<br />

it <strong>and</strong> yarrow. A wound salve: take ribwort <strong>and</strong><br />

yarrow, <strong>and</strong> the netherward part <strong>of</strong> pellitory, <strong>and</strong> dock,<br />

<strong>and</strong> goose dung, <strong>and</strong> a little pitch, <strong>and</strong> honey, boil in<br />

butter, apply it to the wound, then it cleanseth <strong>and</strong><br />

healeth. A wound salve : take yarrow <strong>and</strong> leechwort,<br />

boil in butter.<br />

1 0. A salve to the end that a wound may not foul<br />

take briar, on which hips wax, that is, dog rose, chew<br />

the rind <strong>and</strong> let it drop on the wound, then it Avill<br />

not foul. A wound salve : the netherward part <strong>of</strong><br />

meadow wort, lustmock, hove, everfern, boil in honey,<br />

add thick mashwort among them. A drink for wounds :<br />

the netherward part <strong>of</strong> everthroat, that is, cavline<br />

thistle, <strong>and</strong> meadow sweet, so also the nether <strong>and</strong> upward<br />

part <strong>of</strong> agrimony, boil the worts in ale, barm<br />

them with yeast, that is, introduce fermentation with<br />

yeast, administer to drink.<br />

11. A wound drink : pound small, cuckoo sour,<br />

wild cunila,^ cockle, the netherward part <strong>of</strong> carline<br />

thistle, ashthroat, put them into cold water, rub between<br />
