6. Again, rub burnt salt well in water made lukewarm,<br />

till that it be as thick as a tear <strong>of</strong> honey, lay<br />

on the swelling, overlay with a cloth, <strong>and</strong> with wool<br />

<strong>of</strong> ewe, bind on. For sudden sore <strong>and</strong> swelling, take<br />

wax <strong>and</strong> hemlock, triturate, work this so warm into a<br />

salve, bind on the sore.<br />

7. Against a sudden swelling, take horehound, beat<br />

<strong>and</strong> mingle it with lard, lay on. Again, mingle together<br />

the cottony potentilla, comononly called silverweed,<br />

groats <strong>of</strong> malt, smede or fine flour, cress, the<br />

white <strong>of</strong> an egg, bishopwort, helenium, ontre, lupins,<br />

" sigsonte," comfrey, la}' on. For a dead^ swelling, take ' Without<br />

groundsel, lay it on gledes <strong>and</strong> warm it, <strong>and</strong> lay it so ^'^^^^gwarm<br />

on the Bevelling, <strong>and</strong> bind on with a cloth, let<br />

it be on for a night, if need be for that. For a dead<br />

swelling, beat agrimony, mix with wine <strong>and</strong> with salt,<br />

apply it to the swelling, which soon will depart away.<br />

For swelling, pound attorlothe, lay on the swelling,<br />

swelling, that it may break out, put carhna, helenimn,<br />

goutweed, the two wenworts into an ale drink. For a<br />

dead swelling, take " swanwort," pound it well, mingle<br />

clote, in butter <strong>and</strong> in honey, lay the worts on, mingle<br />

with them the white <strong>of</strong> an egg. A swathing for a<br />

swelling, pound small the upper part <strong>of</strong> bonewort, mingle<br />

with the wort the white <strong>of</strong> an egg, plastei" the limb<br />

on which the swelling may be, with that.<br />

8. Work the bath <strong>of</strong> the same worts in cold well<br />

water, pound the worts very well, lay on, leave the<br />

water on the swelling.<br />

9. For a swelling, pound the netherward part <strong>of</strong><br />

hammerwort <strong>and</strong> sedge ;<br />
