Another virtue is, on whatsoever house it is, therein ;i<br />

fiend i')erha'ps enemy may not be. The third virtue is,<br />

that no venom may scathe the man wlio hath the stone<br />

with him. The fourth virtue is, that the man, who<br />

hath on him secretly the loathly fiend, if he takcth in<br />

liquid any portion <strong>of</strong> the sl)avings <strong>of</strong> this stone, then<br />

soon is exhibited manifestly in him, that wliich before<br />

secretly lay hid. The fifth virtue is, he who is afilicted<br />

with any disease, if he taketli the stone in lic^uid, it<br />

is soon well with him. The sixth virtue is, that sorcery<br />

hurteth not the man, who has the stone with him.<br />

The seventh virtue is, that he who taketh the stone<br />

in drink, will have so much the smootlier body.<br />

The eighth virtue <strong>of</strong> the stone is, that no bite <strong>of</strong> any<br />

kind <strong>of</strong> snake may scathe him who tasteth the stone<br />

in<br />

liquid.<br />

A pint <strong>of</strong> oil weigheth twelve pennies ' less than a<br />

pint <strong>of</strong> water ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> a pint <strong>of</strong> ale weigheth six pennies<br />

more than a pint <strong>of</strong> water ; <strong>and</strong> a joint <strong>of</strong> wine weigheth<br />

fifteen pennies more than a pint <strong>of</strong> water ; <strong>and</strong> a<br />

pint <strong>of</strong> honey weigheth thirty-four pennies more than<br />

a, pint <strong>of</strong> water ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> a pint <strong>of</strong> butter weigheth eighty<br />

pennies less than a pint <strong>of</strong> water ; <strong>and</strong> a pint <strong>of</strong> beer<br />

weigheth twenty-two pennies less than a pint <strong>of</strong> water<br />

<strong>and</strong> a pint <strong>of</strong> meal weigheth 115 pennies less than a<br />

pint<br />

<strong>of</strong> water; <strong>and</strong> a pint <strong>of</strong> beans weigheth fifty-five<br />

pennies less than a pint <strong>of</strong> water; <strong>and</strong> fifteen ounces<br />

<strong>of</strong> water go to the sextarius.^<br />
