For sore <strong>of</strong> the right side, work thyme <strong>and</strong> radish<br />

<strong>and</strong> white clover to a paste, <strong>and</strong> to a drink. For sore<br />

<strong>of</strong> the left side, pound woodr<strong>of</strong>fe in vinegar, <strong>and</strong> work<br />

it to a paste, bind it on the side. Again, betony as<br />

much as three pennies weigh, <strong>and</strong> twenty-seven corns<br />

<strong>of</strong> pepper triturated together ;<br />

pour in three bowls full<br />

<strong>of</strong> old wine, <strong>and</strong> make lukewarm, give to the patient<br />

after his nights fasting to drink. Again for sore <strong>of</strong><br />

side, lay rue mingled with lard <strong>and</strong> beaten, on the<br />

side ; that amendeth it. For sore <strong>of</strong> side again, let<br />

him beat bunches <strong>of</strong> laurel jloiver, let him drink them<br />

in water, <strong>and</strong> bind them on the side. For sore <strong>of</strong><br />

side again, burn to ashes roots <strong>of</strong> colewort, <strong>and</strong> mingle<br />

with old lard, <strong>and</strong> lay on the side.<br />

For loin ache, take betony, as much as two pennies Lumbago,<br />

weigh, add thereto two bowls full <strong>of</strong> sweet wine,<br />

mingle with hot water, give it to drink after his<br />

nights fasting. Again, take groundsel, beat it, <strong>and</strong> give<br />

the juice to drink after his nights fasting.<br />

2. For loin ache, a wort is called ealiver,^ rub it in " Erysimum<br />

ale, <strong>and</strong> let the patient drink it. For the same, a wort Qgrarde<br />

hight hounds tongue, take the leaves, dry them, <strong>and</strong><br />

rub them to meal, then mingle with the wort barley<br />

meal, <strong>and</strong> then apply it in milk.<br />

xxiii.<br />

For thigh ache, smoke the thighs thorouglily with Sciatica.<br />

Again, for a drink, pepper, wine, wallwort, honey<br />

fern.<br />
