ICRI OPERATING UNITS – GCRMN<br />

This is the 3 rd global report from the network with clear evidence <strong>of</strong> progress in obtaining<br />

more authoritative reports from many countries. However, the report also contains much<br />

anecdotal information and assessments from experts, rather than sound monitoring data.<br />

A clear example was for many areas <strong>of</strong> the world seriously damaged by the 1998 global<br />

coral bleaching event, but the GCRMN and <strong>Reef</strong> Check had few before-bleaching data.<br />

Thus there was no way <strong>of</strong> assessing the true impact <strong>of</strong> 1998. The event however catalysed<br />
