Viatka and Vologda to Petersburg. 'For the first few minutes',
he later recollected, 'the large and almost empty compartment
was too crowded and stuffy for me, and I went out on to the
front platform, where the wind was blowing and it was dark.
A loud cry burst out from me-a er~ of joy and freedom.'' So
flushed was he with joy that he did all that prudence should have
counselled him not to do: he was heading for Petersburg,
where every police agent knew him; and he cabled to his wife
about his arrival, asking her to meet him en route. Sedova could
hardly believe her eyes: when the cable arrived the newspapers
of Petersburg were still carrying reports about the journey of
the convicted Soviet leaders to the Polar Circle.
