<strong>the</strong> Romanian army. For five years <strong>the</strong> Socialist party and <strong>the</strong><br />

trade unions waged a campaign for his return. The government<br />

refused to admit him, denouncing him alternately as<br />

an agent of <strong>the</strong> Russian General Staff and as a dangerous<br />

an ti-Tsarist cons pi ra tor.<br />

In exile Rakovsky published several books, one, Russia in <strong>the</strong><br />

East, exposing Tsarist expansion in Asia, and ano<strong>the</strong>r, The<br />

Rumania ef <strong>the</strong> Boyars. In his spare time, <strong>the</strong> pamphleteer, propagandist,<br />

and doctor devoted himself to historical research, <strong>the</strong><br />

fruit of which was Metternich and his Age. Writing with equal case<br />

in Bulgarian, French, Russian, German, and Romanian, he<br />

contributed to political, medical, and historical periodicals in<br />

all <strong>the</strong>se languages. Repeatedly he returned to Bucharest, but<br />

each time <strong>the</strong> expulsion order was n:-cnforccd despite stormy<br />

parliamentary protests and street demonstr
