GATEWAY PACIFIC TERMINAL EIS SCOPING HEARING VOL. II
COURT REPORTER: BETH DRUMMOND PROCEEDING DATE: October 27, 2012
Page 55
threatening, negative impact on our health and environment.
And, today, we live in the 21st century. We don't live in
the 20th century. We don't live in the 19th century.
And on this 21st century Environmental Impact
Statement, we cannot ignore 21st century science. This
means that any infrastructure that promotes the burning of
coal, must address the environmental impact of global
warming.
All systems are interconnected. Our health in
Whatcom County is affected by burning coal anywhere on the
planet. So building a coal terminal contributes to that
impact. To not include the environmental impact in your
scoping about global warming, would either be dishonest; it
would politically motivated; or it would be dismissive of
science-based evidence.
So, furthermore, Environmental Impact Statement
for GPS seriously -- if the Environmental Impact Statement
for GPS seriously addressed this looming environmental
hazard, there's no way that the GPS terminal should be
built.
The good jobs now and in the future, are in
developing energy sources that are not fossil fuels. Coal
is so 19th century. Be brave. Don't just do what
everybody's done in the past.
