GATEWAY PACIFIC TERMINAL EIS SCOPING HEARING VOL. II
COURT REPORTER: BETH DRUMMOND PROCEEDING DATE: October 27, 2012
Page 98
My name is Jenny Maida-Young. I moved to
Bellingham three years ago with my husband. We were drawn
by the clean air, wild salmon and herring fisheries, a
culture of sustainability and a community-oriented
lifestyle.
Recently, we were shocked to hear that our
drinking water from Lake Whatcom harbors the horrifying
evidence of heavy metal contaminants directly attributed to
coal burned in China.
Last month while purchasing mulch on Slater Road
in Ferndale, we encountered a mile-long line of vehicles
waiting at a rail crossing for a coal train to pass through.
I pictured an ambulance caught in that blockage
waiting for 100 coal-loaded rail cars to pass, and then
again, and another one and another one and another one,
every day.
I have a friend in Birch Bay. Originally, I felt
envious of her living so close to the water and islands at
the Samish Sea, until she told me there was coal dust on the
side of her house, and she realized her local community was
breathing that dust.
More trains going through would, literally, be
adding injury to insult. These issues need to be addressed
in your scoping process. Thank for your time.
