COURT REPORTER: BETH DRUMMOND PROCEEDING DATE: October 27, 2012
tourist attractions. My husband and I moved here in 1985
from the islands. Our livelihood has been dependent on
fisheries, travel, tourism, and infrastructure.
I've worked mere feet from the tracks for the
last 17 years. Bellingham is what it is because of the
trains, the coal, the fishing, the logging, and then
tourism.
I am a poster child of what could happen if you
grew up around coal, and I've never been sick a day in my
life because of it.
I do, however, have PTSD from the outcome of two
gas line explosions into the city where I lived.
We cannot survive on tourism and retail alone.
We need good jobs, we need industry, and we need it now.
Thank you.
MS. STRAUSZ-CLARK: 68, 69, and 70. 68 you're at
the microphone. 69 and 70 you're at the desk.
Please state your name for the record.
THE SPEAKER: Hi. My name is Sears Taylor. I
live in Bellingham. My condo overlooks the railroad train.
For the first ten years I lived here, I was
overwhelmed by the train noise, so I really want to live in
a world where there is no train noise; where's there no
train delays; there's no accidents; there's no disease;
there's social justice; no animals are mistreated -- oh,
