Europe would come <strong>to</strong> engage in advanced Talmudic<br />

Around 1720, Eibeschutz's students, who supposedly were<br />

good yeshiva students, did something very out of character<br />

with <strong>the</strong> tenor of what <strong>the</strong> yeshiva world had been and had<br />

exemplified for thousands of years. They vandalized Rabbi<br />

Oppenheim's yeshiva, assaulted some students, inflicting<br />

severe bodily injury and harm upon <strong>the</strong>se students. They<br />

entered <strong>the</strong> yeshiva's main study hail where students were<br />

reviewing <strong>the</strong>ir daily Talmudic assignments, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

completely demolished it.<br />

As a result of this incident, Rabbi Oppenheim's students<br />

began <strong>to</strong> realize <strong>the</strong> real nature of Eibeschutz's yeshiva. In <strong>the</strong><br />

months that followed, Rabbi Oppenheim's students were<br />

ambushed and periodically beaten by Eibeschutz's thugs who<br />

haunted <strong>the</strong> alleyways of <strong>the</strong> city of Prague.<br />

By this time Rabbi Oppenheim's students were engaged in<br />

escalating <strong>the</strong>ir retaliation, and although details of how <strong>the</strong>y<br />

fought back have not survived, it is very possible that some of<br />

Eibeschutz's students were systematically killed, because on<br />

June 16, 1772, Charles VI of Austria issued an edict <strong>to</strong> end <strong>the</strong><br />

feud. 236 I mention this background information because it was<br />

from this environment that Carl An<strong>to</strong>n emerged, a star pupil of<br />

Eibeschutz's yeshiva. After graduation from <strong>the</strong> Yeshiva,<br />

An<strong>to</strong>n converted <strong>to</strong> Christianity. He was a Frankist, and<br />

occupied a chair as professor of Hebrew at Helmstedt. 237<br />

Eibeschutz's disciples had definitive objectives assigned <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m so that <strong>the</strong>y would play certain roles in <strong>the</strong> revolution.<br />

Carl An<strong>to</strong>n's assignment was <strong>to</strong> discredit <strong>the</strong> Bible. In order <strong>to</strong><br />

best accomplish this, no obstacle would stand in his way, such<br />

as his religion. Therefore, An<strong>to</strong>n officially converted <strong>to</strong><br />

Christian so that he could hold an esteemed professorial chair.<br />

An<strong>to</strong>n's function was so sensitive and scandalous that<br />

painstaking efforts were made <strong>to</strong> obscure his activities. This is<br />
