eulogy is <strong>to</strong> be found in Wiener's book. 47 Some remarks of<br />

interest are as follows (italics mine):<br />

1. "We may well derive gratification from <strong>the</strong> fact that our<br />

own native city should have brought forth such a power,<br />

which has wrought fruitful changes and has wrested<br />

recognition from those who hold sway in proud palaces."<br />

2. "Let us be gratefully aware of <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> eye of<br />

God's grace rests upon this city."<br />

3. "It was here that a broader view of <strong>the</strong> world unfolded."<br />

4. "Many are those who have had <strong>the</strong>ir roots here, and<br />

under whose shade <strong>the</strong> whole world has found fresh<br />

vigor, for <strong>the</strong>y have put <strong>to</strong> use for <strong>the</strong> good of all mankind<br />

those talents and that inspiration which <strong>the</strong>y received<br />

from <strong>the</strong> place of <strong>the</strong>ir birth."<br />

5. "They were living and accusing witnesses against all <strong>the</strong><br />

in<strong>to</strong>lerance which still was shown <strong>the</strong> Sons of Israel's<br />

faith against <strong>the</strong> base passions that sought <strong>to</strong> exalt<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves as religious truths, and against that medieval<br />

narrowness which sought <strong>to</strong> clo<strong>the</strong> itself in <strong>the</strong> rich<br />

drapery of <strong>the</strong> cloak of religion."<br />

6. "As princes of peace <strong>the</strong>y were welcomed everywhere."<br />

7. "A bountiful outpouring of blessings flowed forth from<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir homes ... <strong>the</strong>y built hospitals for <strong>the</strong> sick and<br />

clo<strong>the</strong>d <strong>the</strong> naked."<br />

Geiger also stated of <strong>the</strong> Rothschilds in his sermon:<br />

"For <strong>the</strong>y have all remained faithful <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Covenant of Israel<br />

and have loyally adhered <strong>to</strong> it."<br />

If this were true, of course, <strong>the</strong>y would never have had <strong>the</strong><br />

likes of a Geiger deliver <strong>the</strong> eulogy. After he said all those<br />

wonderful things about <strong>the</strong> House of Rothschild, Geiger put a<br />

bid in for himself, he also knew that <strong>the</strong> super-rich wished <strong>to</strong><br />

continue <strong>the</strong>ir work of breaking up Judaism, and he knew that<br />

many seminaries were planned <strong>to</strong> achieve <strong>the</strong>se goals. He,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore, asked <strong>the</strong> Rothschilds <strong>to</strong> finance such an institution<br />
