In 2006, Bertelsmann bought back shares worth 4.5 billion euros from the Belgian Groupe Bruxelles Lambert, having previously<br />

traded them for additional shares in RTL Group. Portfolio adjustments followed. During the economic crisis at the end of the<br />

decade, the new CEO, Hartmut Ostrowski, initiated the biggest cost and effi ciency program in the company’s history. Reinhard<br />

Mohn’s death on October 3 cast a shadow over the year 2009.<br />
