Currently he is North Vice President of UPADI,representing the United States, Mexico and Canada, and isPresident of the WFEO Committee on Capacity Building.Jo da SilvaJo da Silva FREng is a civil and structural engineer and Directorof the International Development team of Arup Group -the global design, technology and management consultancy,focusing on projects in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia to reducepoverty and contribute to sustainable development. She joinedArup after studying engineering at Cambridge University, andhas combined a career at Arup, focused on building design,urban re-generation and sustainable development, with activeinvolvement in humanitarian relief and international development,with particular expertise in shelter-housing, urbanenvironments and disaster risk reduction including climatechange adaptation, and is a member of RedR. She has workedon a variety of award-winning projects in the UK and overseas,including Chek Lap Kok Airport, Osaka Museum, NationalPortrait Gallery and the Royal Geographical Society.Cláudio Amaury Dall’AcquaDr Claudio Dall’Acqua is a civil engineer and former Presidentof UPADI - the Pan American Federation of Engineering Societies(2000 - 2008). Mr. DallÁcqua has more than three decadesof experience in the construction industry and engineeringspecial services, and postgraduate qualifications in BusinessAdministration and Engineering for Safety Work in Construction.Mr. DallÁcqua combines an extensive background inengineering jobs and leadership in the Americas engineeringcommunity as the President of UPADI - representing morethan 2.5 million engineers in 27 countries. Mr. DallÁcquahas received several awards, medals and recognition diplomasof excellence during his professional career. A corporate leader in engineering in Canada andabroad, he has spent his career working for the benefit of theprofession. A Vice President of the World Federation of Engineeringhe chairs the Standing Committee on Engineeringand the Environment and leads the initiative on adaptation ofinfrastructure to the impacts of a changing climate.Irenilza de Alencar NääsIrenilza de Alencar Nääs is an agricultural engineer and Professorat the Agricultural Engineering College, State University ofCampinas, Brazil, and the first woman to be elected presidentof the CIGR - the International Commission of AgriculturalEngineering (2007-2008). She received her PhD in AgriculturalEngineering at Michigan State University in 1980 and is aformer president of the Brazilian Society of Agricultural Engineeringand president of the Latin American and CaribbeanSociety of Agricultural Engineering.Erik de GraaffErik de Graaff a psychologist who majored in the psychology ofwork and organization and was first involved in the developmentof the problem-based curricula of medicine and healthsciences. He then moved to Delft University of Technology tosupport the process of educational innovation at the Facultyof Architecture and then the Faculty of Technology Policy andManagement. Dr de Graaf has contributed to the promotionof knowledge and understanding of higher engineering educationthrough publications and through participation in professionalorganizations including SEFI and IGIP. In 2006 he wasappointed as associate editor of the European Journal of EngineeringEducation and since January 2008 has been Editor-in-Chief of the EJEE. ENGINEERING: ISSUES CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPMENTCheryl DeshaCheryl Desha graduated from Griffith University’s EnvironmentalEngineering degree program, receiving a UniversityMedal and Environmental Engineering medal. She workedfor consulting engineering firm Arup for four years, in 2003became a lecturer in the School of Engineering at Griffith Universityand joined The Natural Edge Project (TNEP) in formalcollaboration with Griffith University. Cheryl is the EducationDirector of The Natural Edge Project - a non-profit partnershipon research, education and strategy for innovation forsustainable prosperity hosted by Griffith University and theAustralian National University. In 2005 Cheryl was EngineersAustralia Young Professional Engineer of the Year. She is currentlyundertaking her PhD on embedding sustainability intoengineering education at Griffith.Allison DickertAllison Dickert has a background in political science as agraduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and GeorgeWashington University. She is Manager of Issues Development,for the American Society of Civil Engineering, and leads theresearch and development for ASCE’s Report Card for America’sInfrastructure.Christelle DidierChristelle Didier has a Doctorate in sociology, and is a lecturerand researcher in the Department of ethics at the CatholicUniversity of Lille. Christelle focuses on the professions andprofessional ethics and is the co-author of one of the few textbooksin French on ethics relating to future engineers. She isalso a member of the Centre Maurice Halbwachs and collaborateswith the European Journal of Engineering Education.Gary DowneyDr Downey is a mechanical engineer, cultural anthropologist,and scholar in interdisciplinary science and technology studies.He is Professor of Science and Technology Studies and an affiliatedfaculty member in the Departments of Engineering Educationand Sociology at Virginia Tech. Gary is the co-founderof the International Network for Engineering Studies – the firstinternational networks on engineering studies, and co-editorof its journal Engineering Studies. His current research exploresthe influences of popular concepts of progress on what countsas engineers and engineering knowledge in different countriesand he is also currently Boeing Company Senior Fellow in EngineeringEducation at the National Academy of Engineering.Xiangyun DuDr Xiangyun Du is an assistant professor at the Departmentof Development and Planning and associated UNESCO Chairin Problem Based Learning (UCPBL Chair) at Aalborg University,Denmark. She is a specialist and researcher on engineeringeducation in Denmark and China – where she was involved inresearch and teaching communication and language skills forengineering students. Her PhD is on gender and engineeringeducation in a PBL setting in Denmark and her main researchinterests include gender studies, intercultural learning, developmentof social competencies, problem-based and project-organizedlearning in higher education in engineering education.Walter ErdelenWalter Erdelen habilitated in Biogeography at the University ofthe Saarland, Germany, and has taught at universities and publicschools in Germany and abroad as well as published numerouspapers and books in the fields of environmental sciences,conservation biology, ecology, systematics and evolutionarybiology. Apart from his academic experience, Prof. Erdelen hasfulfilled a number of advisory and evaluation tasks for nationaland international organizations, especially in relation to ecologicalresearch and conservation programmes in developingcountries. Walter was Assistant Director-General for NaturalSciences of UNESCO from 2001 to July 2010, responsible foroverall formulation, planning and coordination of UNESCO’sstrategy and programmes in the natural sciences, and was cochairof the founding editorial advisory board of the UNESCOEngineering Report.Wendy FaulknerDr Faulkner trained in biology and then science and technologypolicy studies, and joined the University of Edinburghin 1988 to develop, run and teach on the University’s postgraduateProgramme in Science and Technology Studies. Herresearch interests include gender and technology and publicengagement in science, with increasing interest in engineeringand technology, and associated gender issues including engineeringidentity and the retention of women in engineering.Monique FrizeDr Frize is a biomedical engineer with a background in electricalengineering and expertise in medical instrumentation anddecision-support systems. After extensive experience as a clinicalengineer, in 1989 she was appointed as the first holder of theWomen in Engineering Chair and professor of Electrical Engineeringat the University of New Brunswick. In 1997 Dr Frize wasappointed Professor of Systems and Computer Engineering atCarleton University and Professor in the School of InformationTechnology and Engineering at the University of Ottawa. Shewas instrumental in establishing the International Network ofWomen Engineers and Scientists (INWES). Prof. Frize’s researchis on clinical decision-support systems, infrared medical imaging,clinical engineering, ethics, and women in engineering.Willi FuchsDr-Ing Willi Fuchs studied Mechanical Engineering at the Universityof Siegen where he obtained his degree as Dr-Ing in1986.
