He isthe Vice- Chairperson of the Ug<strong>and</strong>a National Commission<strong>for</strong> UNESCO, <strong>and</strong> has been a member of the UNESCO ExecutiveBoard. Prof. Lugujjo has particular interests in engineeringeducation <strong>and</strong> the application of engineering <strong>for</strong> social <strong>and</strong>economic <strong>development</strong>. He was previously a physics teacherat Makerere College School <strong>and</strong> it is reported that in the 1980sthat the popularity of his teaching <strong>and</strong> tuition at school <strong>and</strong>his home encouraged interest in engineering to the extent thatseveral <strong>for</strong>mer students are now senior engineers in Ug<strong>and</strong>a<strong>and</strong> owe success in their careers to him.Takaaki MaekawaDr Takaaki Maekawa is an agricultural <strong>and</strong> environmentalengineer, <strong>for</strong>mer Secretary General of the International Commissionof Agricultural <strong>Engineering</strong> (CIGR) <strong>and</strong> ProfessorEmeritus of the University of Tsukuba Graduate School of Life<strong>and</strong> Environmental Sciences <strong>and</strong> Research Institute of TsukubaBio-Tech (RITB). He is a member of the Science Council ofJapan <strong>and</strong> was a member of the International Commission ofAgricultural Biosystems <strong>Engineering</strong> of CIGR. Prof Maekawa’sspecialized field of interest is biomass conversion, <strong>and</strong> he is aspecialist on the breakthrough technology to produce renewablejet <strong>and</strong> automobile fuels from algae, with support fromthe Japan Science <strong>and</strong> Technology Agency (JST).Donald S. MansellDr Don Mansell is a civil <strong>and</strong> structural engineer <strong>and</strong> an HonoraryProfessor at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He hasa Master of <strong>Engineering</strong> Science <strong>and</strong> Doctorate in civil engineeringfrom the University of Swansea, Wales, <strong>and</strong> is a Fellowof the Society of Engineers of Papua New (FSPEPNG), Memberof the American Society of Civil Engineers (MASCE) <strong>and</strong> Memberof the Institution of Engineers, Australia (MIEAUST). Donwas one of the founders of the International DevelopmentTechnologies Centre at the University of Melbourne – one ofthe pioneering university departments focused on the role ofengineering <strong>and</strong> technology in <strong>development</strong>.Tony MarjoramDr Tony Marjoram, CPEng, FIEAust, AMIMechE, has a BScin mechanical engineering, MSc in science <strong>and</strong> technologypolicy <strong>and</strong> PhD in technology <strong>and</strong> <strong>development</strong>, <strong>and</strong> has over25 years experience in engineering, science <strong>and</strong> technologypolicy, planning <strong>and</strong> management <strong>for</strong> <strong>development</strong>.
