She is also the Vice Chairof the National Science Board, appointed by the President in2006 and Senate, confirmed for a 6-year term. Pat was the firstwomen President of the American Society of Civil Engineers in152 years – serving as a role model to young girls and womento pave the way and shatter the glass ceiling in the engineeringprofession.P.S. GoelDr Prem Shanker Goel is the President of the Indian NationalAcademy of Engineering (INAE), Dr Vikram Sarabhai DistinguishedProfessor at the Indian Space Research Centre (ISRO)and Chairman of the Recruitment and Assessment Centre ofthe Defence Research & Development Organization. He hasa degree in Electrical Engineering, Master of Engineering andPhD in applied electronics and servomechanisms. After his MEin 1970 he joined the Satellite Systems Division, Space Scienceand Technology Centre (Now Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre)to work on satellite attitude control systems for satellite. In1972 he moved to Bangalore, as part of the Indian ScientificSatellite Project (ISSP, now ISRO) to work on spin control systemsand remote sensing from spin stabilized satellites.Barry J GrearBarry Grear, AO, is an electrical engineer with a long experiencein executive positions in state and federal governmentin Australia, relating particularly to transportation systems,disasters and the built environment, professional engineeringrequirements for graduates and practicing engineers. Barry hasbeen active in WFEO for more than a decade and was the VicePresident from 2006-2008 and President from 20097-2009. Heis a former President of Engineers Australia, was the inauguralChair of the APEC Engineer Coordinating Committee, Chair ofthe Australian Monitoring Committee for APEC (Asian PacificEconomic Cooperation) and the Engineers Mobility Forum(EMF). Barry was also active with the Federation of EngineeringInstitutions of South East Asia and the Pacific (FEISEAP,now Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and thePacific - FEIAP) and treasurer of RedR Australia and secretaryof RedR International (the main international engineeringNGO working in disaster relief).Philip GreenishPhilip Greenish, CBE, has been Chief Executive Officer of theRoyal Academy of Engineering since 2003. He is one ofthe co-founders and a Director of The Natural Edge Project(TNEP) – an interdisciplinary project focusing on research andrelated cooperation in sustainable development based in Australia.Charlie and TNEP have developed a number of books onsustainable development, including ‘Factor Five: Transformingthe Global Economy through 80% Improvements in ResourceProductivity’ published with Ernst Von Weizsäcker, updatingthe seminal ‘Factor Four’ of 1997, and a UNESCO toolkit ofinformation and teaching material on ‘Engineering SustainableSolutions’. He works closely with Hunter Lovins and Amory B.Lovins, Chairman and Chief Scientist of the Rocky MountainInstitute, and ‘The Natural Advantage of Nations’ project, andis an Associate Member of the Club of Rome.Rohani HashimDr. Rohani Hashim is Secretary-General of the World Associationof Industrial and Technological Research Organisations(WAITRO), based at the Environmental and Energy TechnologyCentre of the Standard and Industrial Research Institutefor Malaysia (SIRIM).Sascha HermannDipl-Ing Sascha Hermann leads the Technology Centre of VDI- the Association of German Engineers, a VDI company thatsupports new technologies and acts as consultant and fundadministration unit for the German Ministry of Education andResearch. Dr Ishii has 50years experience as a consulting engineer in the developmentof water-related infrastructure, is the Chair of the Disaster RiskManagement Task Force of the World Federation of EngineeringOrganizations and Past President of the Japan Society ofCivil Engineers.Mervyn E. JonesDr Mervyn Jones has degrees in Physics, Materials Scienceand Electrical Engineering and 25 years research experience inindustry and university, working on magnetic, optoelectronic,silicon/germanium heterostructure device development. Heis a Distinguished Research Fellow in the Optical and SemiconductorDevices Group in the Department of Electrical andElectronic Engineering at Imperial College, London. JonesDr Russ Jones is a consultant on international engineeringeducation, and was founding chair of the Standing Committeeon Capacity Building of the World Federation of EngineeringOrganizations. Dr Jones was Advisor to the Khalifa Universityof Science, Technology and Research in Abu Dhabi, UAE, andalso previously served as founding president of the MasdarInstitute of Science and Technology in the UAE.
