SECTION 3: COMMUNITY PROFILE3.3 HOUSING, INFRASTRUCTURE, AND LAND USE3.3.1 HousingAccording to the Census Bureau’s 2006 American Community Survey, there were 203,394 housing unitsin <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Of these structures, 74 percent are single-unit and 17 percent are multi-unit. Theremaining 9 percent are mobile homes or other types of housing. The median value of owner-occupiedhousing units was $201,700, compared to the $230,600 average in Florida and the $185,200 nationalaverage.3.3.2 InfrastructureInfrastructure is categorized in this Plan as Transportation and Utilities, as these elements are vital in adisaster event, both for evacuation and for response and recovery efforts. <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong> is endowedwith multi-modes of transportation and has several utility providers.Transportation<strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong> has several transportation options whether traveling by automobile, rail, or air. Thereare two federal interstates which run through the <strong>County</strong>: Interstate 95 runs north to south along thecoast, and Interstate 4 runs northeast, connecting the <strong>County</strong> to Orlando, and merging with I-95 nearDaytona Beach. There are also four federal highways (U.S. 1, U.S. 17, U.S. 40 and U.S. 92). There are alsothree major railway transportation providers (Amtrak, CSX, and Florida East Coast Railway), and anumber of regional airports. The major area airport is Daytona Beach International Airport. In addition,Port Canaveral, a deep water port, and one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, is located about 70miles south of <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong> in Brevard <strong>County</strong>.UtilitiesFlorida Power and Light, Progress Energy, City of New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission, and ClayElectric Cooperative serve the electricity needs in <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong>. The natural gas suppliers are FloridaPublic Utilities and TECO People’s Gas.
