SECTION 5: HAZARD PROFILESSome of the notable tropical cyclone events that occurred in <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong> within the last two decadesare described below (Information from National Climatic Data Center, National Oceanic andAtmospheric Administration, National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center):Tropical Storm Gordon, 1994Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall in South Florida on November 13, 1994. Gordon caused a total of 8deaths, 43 injuries, and $400 million in damages ($605,793,853; 2009 dollars). It affected a number ofFlorida Counties, including Dade and Brevard, but <strong>Volusia</strong> was hit especially hard. <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong>experienced $500,000 in both agricultural and property damage. Single-family, multi-family, and mobilehome structures (a total of 1236 units) reported flood damage and losses were estimated at over $26million.Hurricane Floyd, 1999On September 15, 1999, the center of Hurricane Floyd passed about 115 statute miles off the coast ofCentral Florida, causing substantial damage to the coastal counties of Brevard and <strong>Volusia</strong>. Winds gustsnear 70 miles per hour were reported in both counties. In total, Floyd caused over $61 million inproperty damage, but there were no reports of deaths or injuries ($81,978,899; 2009 dollars). Over $42million in damages were reported in <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong>, $10 million of which was attributed directly tocoastal erosion. In addition, over 300 homes were damaged from wind and falling trees.Hurricane Irene, 1999Hurricane Irene reached hurricane status over the Florida Straits and the calm of the center moved overKey West on October 15, 1999. Most of the hurricane force winds were confined to the east of Irene’scenter over the lower to middle Keys. As Hurricane Irene moved across Southeast Florida, it broughttropical storm conditions with sustained winds between 39 and 73 miles per hour. Hurricane Irenecaused considerable damage in South Florida due to flooding. In some residential areas, flooding lastedfor a week, displacing several hundred people and isolating thousands more. <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong> estimatedthat damages to approximately 185 properties; totaling more than $16.8 million. The total losses(agricultural and property) were estimated near $800 millions in of the state of Florida. An estimated700,000 costumers lost electricity. There were eight indirect deaths reported in Florida.Hurricane Charley, 2004Hurricane Charley produced wind gusts over 80 miles per hour as it traversed <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong> on August13, 2004. The storm caused over $106 million in property damages in <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong>. In addition, twofatalities were attributed to Hurricane Charley. Widespread power outages, roadway flooding, and fallentrees also occurred. A strong F1 tornado also touched down in South Daytona Beach contributing to thetotal damage from the event.Hurricane Frances, 2004Hurricane Frances, a Category 2 storm, made landfall on September 4, 2004 in Martin <strong>County</strong>, Florida.As it moved north, <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong> experienced hurricane force wind for several hours. Daytona BeachInternational Airport recorded wind gusts of 94 miles per hour. In addition to wind impacts, over 13inches of rain fell in <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong> which caused substantial flooding. Wind and flooding impactsresulted in damages of over $390 million within <strong>Volusia</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Total damage estimates for all impactedcounties include over $4.8 billion for property damage and $93.2 million for crop damage.
