It lifted just west ofHighway 1 after passing ChisholmElementary School. The tornadothen struck New Smyrna BeachHigh School producing Fujita ScaleF1 damage. As the tornadointensified to a strong F3 category,it passed through the VenetianVillas subdivision and the DiamondHead Condominiums. A number oflarge well built homes weredestroyed. Many of the units inthe 10 story Diamond HeadCondominiums received majordamage as high winds blew outexterior glass walls and blewfurniture into the adjoining IndianRiver Lagoon. The tornado thencrossed the Intracoastal Waterwayand passed over the barrier islandbetween Robinson Road and EastStreet where a number of largewell built homes were almostcompletely destroyed. Thetornado then moved over theAtlantic Ocean. In all 32 peoplewere injured, six requiringhospitalization. Thirty one homeswere destroyed and 290 weredamaged. Damage estimates werenear 14 million dollars.Sixteen mobile homes weredamaged and one was destroyed.Daytona Beach 2/22/1998 F2 1/3 $5,504,681 This tornado cell caused extensivedamage and two deathsOsteen 2/23/1998 F3 1/0 $1,376,170 throughout Volusia County.
