25 Financial AidReinstatement of Financial Aid EligibilityFinancial aid eligibility may be regained by eliminating all satisfactory academic progressdeficiencies (at the student’s expense until the requirements of this policy are met, or by appealingtheir satisfactory academic progress status. The following sections describe the areas a student isrequired to remedy in order to regain financial aid eligibility. Students who do not enroll for asemester, or pay for school at their own expense, do not automatically qualify to receive financialaid in a subsequent semester. The terms and conditions of the Satisfactory Academic Policy mustbe met.• Cumulative GPA’s can only be brought up by class attendance at Barton College.• Hours Earned deficiencies may be made up by successfully completing coursework at BartonCollege or at another institution. However, students who are enrolling elsewhere must completethe General College Petition Form and have the coursework approved by the Registrar priorto enrolling in another institution. After transient study coursework has been successfullycompleted, students must provide an official academic transcript to the Registrar’s Office.Once students are in compliance with all three standards, they must notify the Financial Aid Office(in writing), to request an evaluation of eligibility. This process cannot be completed until all gradesand hours are posted to the student’s official record at Barton College. No financial aid award iscalculated until after the review process is complete. Evaluation cannot occur until after changes aredue for the upcoming term; therefore, an award letter or deferment of charges may not be availablefor the semester the student regains eligibility. The student should make other arrangements to payfor tuition, fees, room, board, and all other expenses.AppealsFederal regulations allow for certain cases in which the school may waive the standards. Appeals forthe waiver may be considered if a student’s failure to comply with one or more areas of SatisfactoryAcademic Progress is due to events beyond the student’s control, such as a student’s extended illness, serious illness or death in the immediate family, or other significant life experience that impactedthe student’s emotional and/or physical health, and if such mitigating circumstances can beappropriately documented for the specific term(s) in which the deficiency occurred. Eligibility maybe regained by appeal. Contact the Financial Aid Office to obtain a Satisfactory Academic Progress(SAP) Appeal Form. SAP appeals are considered on a case-by-case basis.• Appeals Procedure – Appeals (professional judgment) are the only mechanism available tocorrect unresolved SAP deficiencies. All appeals shall be documented using the current form. Some appeals may be approved for a probationary term. If this is the case, the student maybe required to follow an academic plan that specifies conditions necessary to be eligible forthe following term. These conditions may include:— Minimum GPA requirement— A minimum number of hours to be taken; and/or— Corrective measures to enhance a student’s successStudents requiring an academic plan are required to meet with the Assistant Dean ofStudent Success.
