74 Degree RequirementsInformation and Communication Technology. 3 semester hours.This requirement may be satisfied by successfully completing CIS 110 (which includes terminologyas well as hands-on applications of word processing, spreadsheets, database, and Internet skills).The School of Business administers placement testing. A student who tests out of CIS 110 hassatisfied the Computer Proficiency requirement but receives no credit hours. A student who testsout of CIS 110 and then completes CIS 330 with a grade of at least C- receives six semester hoursof credit (three hours for the Computer Proficiency requirement and three hours for an upperlevel elective).Global Awareness. 12 semester hours.The Global Awareness courses, including both American/Western Culture (AWC) and WDC(Global) electives are 100-200 level courses in the humanities and social sciences that studentsmay choose from a short list provided by the <strong>College</strong>. These are the courses which <strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong>believes can best give students an understanding of the world in which they live. Two of thecourses must primarily focus on the American and Western culture (AWC) in which they live orits development. The other two must primarily focus on the other cultures which exist around theworld (WDC) or their development.Note 1: Each course in this area will have one of the following learning outcomes: Written Communication (W),Oral Communication (O), and Critical Thinking (C). All students must complete two Written Communicationcourses, one Oral Communication course, and one Critical Thinking course. Courses that are offered will have thelearning outcome indicated on the course title with either “W” for Written Communication, “O” for OralCommunication, or “C” for Critical Thinking.Note 2: In order to graduate, the student must successfully complete six writing intensive courses. Two of thesewriting intensive courses may include the two Written Communication courses in the Global Awareness area.Successful completion is defined as the achievement of at least a C- grade.American/Western Culture Courses (AWC)AWC 201.
