77 Degree RequirementsLifetime ActivityA student may take any 100-level Physical Education (PED) course except those listed inthe Physical Fitness list above and PED 132, 133, and 136.Science. 4 semester hours.This requirement may be satisfied by completing the following course or the specific coursedesignated for the major:SCI 110. Modern Topics in Science.Critical thinking intensive course, an introduction to science and the scientific methodin the context of current issues in science, intended to give non-science majors anunderstanding of scientific developments and controversies adults should be cognizantof in the 21st century world. Required of all students unless their prospective majorrequires a more specialized course. Includes laboratory experience. Fall, spring.Exploration. 12 semester hours.These courses are intended to allow students to explore a possible major. If more than two coursesof another field (defined by prefix but BUS, FNC and MGT are treated as one prefix) are requiredfor a student’s major, then additional courses in that field cannot be take as Exploration courses.Foreign language courses may be taken but are limited to two courses. Some courses in this areamay have one of the following learning outcomes: Written Communication (W), OralCommunication (O), and Critical Thinking (C).Travel Courses.Travel courses may count as Exploration. A travel course must be taught by a <strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong>faculty member who accompanies the student, must contain rigorous reading and writingrequirements, and must be approved by the Curriculum Committee. Any student participatingin a travel course must sign the <strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong> indemnity agreement.General Education CapstoneGEN 301. General Education Capstone Seminar. 3 semester hours.A problem-based learning seminar in which students think soundly and creatively to plan,design, and evaluate real solutions to authentic problems in today’s world (i.e., global warming,globalization, energy policy, social security reform, immigration). Topics will vary with the faculty.The course is axiomatically interdisciplinary because all modern problems inherently crossacademic disciplines. Students must collaborate to define and analyze the problem, consider itsmany sides, examine various perspectives, develop and analyze possible solutions and consider theplanned and unintended consequences of those solutions. Students will be expected to discuss,debate and present their solutions orally and in writing. Required of all students in their junioryear. New transfer students at the junior level may take GEN 301 after one semester of enrollmentat <strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong>.
