71 Degree Requirements• Application for graduation. An undergraduate student applies in September forDecember, May, or August graduation. Diplomas are ordered based on these applications.Graduate level students apply for graduation in May.• Choice of catalog for core requirements. All current and new students are requiredto complete the new general education core requirements adopted by the Faculty Assemblyin November 2007.• Choice of catalog for major requirements. The catalog in effect at the date that thestudent makes formal application for a major or at readmission (whichever is later) is thecatalog which governs the major of the student.The General <strong>College</strong> CoreThe General <strong>College</strong> Core intentionally focuses upon the Learning Outcomes of <strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong>and embeds the skills in content courses. It provides clear places for assessment of the LearningOutcomes in specific courses and follows a unified vision designed to create a “<strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong>graduate” who will face the future with an understanding of the actual world in which he/shelives and works. The Core concludes with a capstone seminar in which students demonstratetheir improved analytical abilities, improved oral and written communication skills, increasedunderstanding of the world by defining, researching, discussing, writing about and attempting tosolve real-world problems.Freshmen are strongly urged to complete 24 hours in the General <strong>College</strong> Core in the first yearof enrollment. Students are strongly urged to complete at least an additional 18 hours of corecourses during the sophomore year. Because of the importance of the intellectual and philosophicalbackground provided by core courses, academic programs at <strong>Barton</strong> are designed to assist thestudent in meeting the above guidelines.A student is required to complete the General <strong>College</strong> Core requirements as a part of thedegree program.To promote students’ success throughout the curriculum, all <strong>Barton</strong> students are expected tocomplete the Core within their freshman and sophomore years. The General Education CapstoneSeminar, GEN 301, will be taken during the junior year.Learning OutcomesIn order to graduate, a student must successfully complete six writing intensive courses, oneoral communication intensive course, and one critical thinking intensive course. In addition toENG 101, 102/103, major Gateway course, and major Summit course, two of the writingintensive course must include two Written Communication courses from the Global Awareness/or Exploration areas in the General Education Core. Successful completion is defined as theachievement of at least a C- grade.
