64 Student LifeThe E.G. Purcell, Jr., Bible Conference was established in 1984 in honor of EugeneG. Purcell, Jr., who was a member of the Department of Religion and Philosophy from 1957 to1984. The lectures are designed to provide the public with the finest in recent biblical scholarshipeach year. From the beginning, the Purcell Bible Conference has been planned with the laity of thechurch in mind.Chapel Services are offered on designated Sunday evenings in Howard Chapel. The <strong>College</strong>community also gathers for worship around major holidays or <strong>College</strong>-sponsored events, such asHomecoming, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Baccalaureate. See the campus calendar for specificdates and times.Athletics and RecreationA well-rounded program of physical recreation opportunities, intramural sports, and intercollegiatesports are conducted at <strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Although participation is encouraged in the intercollegiatesports, the campus community seeks to maintain a healthy interest in recreational opportunities andintramural sports so that greater numbers can benefit from such activities.Eligibility to compete for intercollegiate teams is determined by the head coach of each team,and in concert with the rules of affiliation with the National Association for Collegiate Athletics(NCAA) at the Division II level, and Conference Carolinas. The <strong>College</strong> fields intercollegiate teamsfor men and women in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, track and field, tennis, and volleyball,for men in baseball, and for women in fast-pitch softball. <strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s intercollegiate athleticteams compete as “The Bulldogs.” A cheer team is sponsored as a club through the StudentGovernment Association. Intramural sports are conducted through the Office of Student Life andcampus recreational opportunities in the Kennedy Recreation and Intramural Center (KRIC) aresupervised by the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies.Student ServicesHealth and Counseling Services<strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers health and counseling services through its Lee Student Health Center thatare designed to assist in the student’s physical and mental health and well-being from the time ofadmission through graduation. The Lee Student Health Center is open Monday-Friday during thefall and spring semesters.Student InsuranceAn insurance plan chosen by the <strong>College</strong> is available for all students taking more than ninesemester hours to purchase. This insurance plan covers an entire year, beginning at the end ofAugust. Any medical expenses incurred, which insurance will not pay, are the responsibility ofthe student.
