Directed Studies will be allowed only in special circumstances.Independent StudiesAn Independent Study is a course that is created by the student and instructor in order to allowthe student to pursue a special topic of study to supplement coursework taken in regularlyscheduled classes. The course number assigned is “480.”The following guidelines apply to any Directed Studies or Independent Studies:• They are open only to junior or senior level students.• They are limited to the area of the student’s major or minor.• For a study in the minor, the student must have successfully completed nine hours in a fieldoutside the major.• The student must have a 2.50 overall grade point average and a 2.50 in the major or minor.• No more than six hours of Individualized Study may count in the hours toward graduation.• Any exceptions to these guidelines must be approved by the Provost and Vice President forAcademic Affairs.Transfer Credit<strong>College</strong>-level credits earned at another institution may be transferred to the <strong>College</strong> if they meetthe following criteria:• The transfer grade point average is based on all hours attempted at all institutions attendedother than <strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong>. The institution must be regionally accredited. In evaluatingtransfer credit, the <strong>College</strong> accepts the provisions of the North Carolina ComprehensiveArticulation Agreement. For institutions outside the North Carolina ComprehensiveArticulation Agreement, the eligibility of non-core courses for transfer is determined by theRegistrar in consultation with the major faculty. In a core course, the course is eligible fortransfer if taken for credit in a course category comparable to the core requirements orperspective at <strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong>, under the assumption that the <strong>College</strong> recognizes theprofessional integrity of other post-secondary institutions which are regionally accredited.The underlying concept is that competencies and understandings developed by generaleducation programs as a whole are more important than individual courses.• Transfer credit is not given for life experience, continuing education units (CEU’s), or coursestaken at non-regionally accredited institutions.• All quarter credit transfer courses are converted to semester credits.• The transfer GPA is computed using the whole letter grades; pluses and minuses arenot computed.
