94 Academic RegulationsChallenge ExamsA student whose professional career background provides preparation to challenge a course mayrequest to take a challenge examination. This examination is not intended for a student who hasenrolled in and failed the course. The student who does not pass this examination on the firstattempt may not repeat the challenge examination process for the same course. Only an individualcurrently enrolled at the <strong>College</strong> or who, though not enrolled, has filed an application with theOffice of Admissions as a degree seeking student, is eligible for this procedure. A “Request forChallenge Examination” form is available in the Office of the Provost and Vice President forAcademic Affairs. The form needs the signatures of the following three persons to gain approval:The Chair of the Department or the Dean of the School in which the course is listed; the facultymember who administers the exam, and the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Thestudent must pay the fee to challenge the course prior to taking the exam. Upon completion of theexam, the instructor must submit the grade to the Office of the Registrar. The student will be billedfor the credits challenged, irrespective of the grade earned. The grade earned is final and cannotbe changed. See “<strong>College</strong> Expenses” for the fee for challenging a course.Regulations Governing Credit by ExaminationA maximum of 30 hours of credit may be granted for Advanced Placement, CLEP SubjectExaminations, extension courses, challenge examinations, or any combination of these.Course GradesGrade ReportsGrade reports are not printed or mailed. All grades can be accessed by each student on the<strong>Barton</strong> <strong>College</strong> intranet. Parents of dependent students may request, in writing, that a copy of thegrades be sent from the Office of the Registrar without the student’s permission. Such requestsare honored only once the Office of the Registrar has confirmation that the student is dependentaccording to federal tax information.Grade TranscriptsA transcript reflects the student’s complete academic record. Requests for a copy of the transcriptshould be make to the Office of the Registrar. Transcripts are not issued without the writtenpermission of the student.
