79 Honors and AwardsHONORS AND AWARDSHonors for Graduating SeniorsThe Coggins Cup is awarded at Commencement to the graduating senior,who, in the estimation of the faculty/staff, has the best general record in academicachievement and overall contribution to the <strong>College</strong> and surrounding community.The student must have achieved a career grade point average of 3.00 in order to beconsidered for this award. The cup is named for J.C. Coggins, who served as thefirst President of the <strong>College</strong> from 1902 to 1904.The Hemby Leadership Cup is awarded at Commencement to the graduatingsenior, who, in the estimation of the <strong>College</strong> community (including students, facultyand staff), has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout a career at <strong>Barton</strong><strong>College</strong>. The honoree must have held significant leadership roles in the outsideformal structures of the college and broader community, and must have shown aspirited and faithful commitment to the college mission. The cup is named foralumni James B. and Joan Edwards Hemby, in honor of Dr. Hemby’s twenty yearsas president and in recognition of the many contributions of both to the campusand surrounding community.The Hilley Cup is given at Commencement to the graduate who has received thehighest grade point average earned over an entire collegiate career. To be consideredfor this award, the student must have completed at least 60 semester hours at the<strong>College</strong>. The grade point average is computed on all work attempted at all collegesattended. The cup is named for Howard Stevens Hilley, a former Professor of Ancientand Modern Languages, who served as President of the <strong>College</strong> from 1920 to 1949.Graduation Honors are based on academic achievement as measured bygrade point average. A senior whose cumulative average is between 3.30 and 3.59graduates cum laude; one whose cumulative average is between 3.60 and 3.89graduates magna cum laude; one whose cumulative average is 3.90 or moregraduates summa cum laude. The grade point average is computed on all workattempted at all colleges attended.Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and <strong>College</strong>s is alisting of outstanding students in many of the colleges and universities in the United States. In thefall of each year, the faculty selects a number of senior students for this recognition. The selectionis based on scholarship, participation and leadership in extra-curricular activities, citizenship andservice to the <strong>College</strong>, and future promise.
