OF MATTER, MINI), AND SI'IIUT. 3951920. But if this will of the Creator exists, it must have gome mediumthrough which it roaches the objects which it influences, just as the etlicrof the \indulationist is necessary to the transmission of light. It isthrough this medium that gravitation exists as one of the cfiects of divinewill, since, although it appears to be a property of matter, it is inferred tobo no less the effect of an habitual exercise of volition, than the erectposture preserved in man, by analogous means, unconsciously;whence, inhim, it ceases "with sleep. The human will, within its comparativelyminute, humble sphere of action, must require also a medium analogousto that through which God acts; otherwise, how docs a thought so quicklymove the toe ? While encompassed by its perishable tenement, there isa certain extent of this will-power enjoyed through the laws of God;but on casting off this envelope, the spirit, to be qualified for its new stateof existence, becomes endowed with more extensive power of the nature inquestion.1921. This power of the will exists and is displayed in the mesmericphenomena, where the will of one individual dominates over the limbsanother. The power of the will of an individual over his own muscles, not only in the usual movement, but in producing a rigidity of the musclesof the arm or thigh, is of course notorious. But it appears thatthere arc some persons morbidly susceptible of this rigidity, or at leastpreternaturally liable to it. Again, others have a will which is, in somedegree, preternatural ;hence, when such persons are in proximity, the onecan actuate the muscles of the other, and even modify the impressionsthe brain.1922. Spirits, as above stated, appear to be endowed with this willpowerto an extent proportioned to their necessities.ofonHence it was substantiatedby my spirit father in the first instance, and by the convocation ofspirits in the second, that they, like the genius of Aladdin's lamp, cancreate, in their own world, the objects of rational desire or fancy by a^a^,but their will-power cannot directly move mundane bodies. In order toeffect this, they must avail themselves of the coarser medium of the humanwill-power, in which case they act, as one mortal may act upon the willpowerof another in proximity. The will-power aura of human beingsand of spirits seems to emanate from their organism respectively, and,no doubt, connects duly with that of God. Hence, there is thus, thatassociation of the divine will, with all animated beings, which is su"--gested by the popular theology. The will, and the aura through whichit acts, varying with the organism with which it is associated, it requiresa certain coincidence in the attributes of a spirit and a mortal, to enablethe former to use the aura of the latter to produce any manifestation ofits will or ideas. But so far as this coincidence exists, the power is enjoyed. That such coincidences have arisen, I conceive must be evident from thecareful consideration of the facts which I have recorded in this work.
