■A hard hyphen if it is used in any other situation, for example, if it appearswithin a word.Parentheses and double quotesHyphenated words are split into constituent words. Also, the fact thathyphenated words are part of a single unit is recorded by the system for laterreference and processing.TIP: A hyphenated score, such as a football score of 37-27, should be sent toVocalizer as “37 to 27” or “37, 27”so the output is not rendered as “thirty sevenminus twenty seven.”Vocalizer handles parentheses and double quotes. If a closing parenthesis ordouble quote occurs without any preceding matching symbol, for example, anopen parenthesis, Vocalizer reads the close parenthesis or double quote as text.If two double quotes appear consecutively, they will also be read as text. Forexample:Input text(hi)hi)“hi”Output texthihi parenthesishi“” quote quoteApostrophes and single quotesSince apostrophes and single quotes are represented by the same ASCIIcharacter, ambiguous situations may occur at times. For example, consider acase where two or more words ending in “s” followed by an apostrophe (‘)character are found consecutively in the same sentence:‘Sorry, we do not deal with customers’ complaints.’In cases such as this one, Vocalizer considers the last (‘) character as the closingof a quoted section (if previously opened) and the remaining (‘) characters asapostrophes. To avoid ambiguous situations, Vocalizer uses the following set ofdisambiguation rules regarding the (‘) character:■■An apostrophe if the character appears within a wordAn open single quote if the character is the first character of a word72Nuance Vocalizer 3.0Developer’s Guide
