Iraq Timeline<br />

2005 June Massoud Barzani is selected as the president of the<br />

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).<br />

2005 August The draft version of the new constitution is accepted by<br />

Shiite and Kurdish negotiators. Sunni representatives refuse.<br />

2005 October 15 Iraqi citizens vote for new constitution that will create<br />

Islamic federal democracy. The new constitution is approved.<br />

2005 December First government and parliamentary elections take place<br />

since allied invasion.<br />

Civil Unrest<br />

2006 January– UN estimates that more than 34,000 civilians killed in<br />

December violence in 2006, more than three times official Iraqi<br />

death toll estimates.<br />

2006 February 22 Al-Askari Mosque in Samarra, one of the most important<br />

Shiite mosques in the world, is bombed. That event<br />

unleashes a wave of civil unrest and violence throughout<br />

the country.<br />

2006 April 22 President Talabani forms new government with Shiite<br />

compromise candidate Nouri al-Maliki to end political<br />

stalemate. Maliki becomes prime minister.<br />

2006 May and June UN reports that more than 100 civilians are killed each<br />

day.<br />

2006 June 7 U.S. airstrike kills al Qaeda’s leader in Iraq, Abu Musab<br />

al-Zarqawi.<br />

2006 November Iraq and Syria reestablish full diplomatic relations. Car<br />

bombings in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City in<br />

Baghdad result in one of the deadliest attacks in Baghdad<br />

since 2003.<br />

2006 November 5 Saddam is sentenced to death by hanging.<br />
