BACKGROUND Salt Lake City is Utah’s capital and is located in the upper northwest corner of the state, as shown in Figure G-1. The city’s population grew from 159,936 in 1990 to 181,743 in 2000. Of the 181,743 residents in 2000, 9.2 percent were between the ages of 65 and 84 and 1.7 percent were 85 and older. This means that 10.9 percent of the population was 65 and older. This is higher than the state of Utah (8.5 percent) but slightly lower than the United States as a whole (12.4 percent), as shown in Table G-1 (Utah Travel Industry Website). Figure G-1.
