BACKGROUND<br />
Salt Lake City is Utah’s capital and is located in the upper northwest corner of the state, as shown<br />
in Figure G-1. The city’s population grew from 159,936 in 1990 to 181,743 in 2000. Of the 181,743<br />
residents in 2000, 9.2 percent were between the ages of 65 and 84 and 1.7 percent were 85 and<br />
older. This means that 10.9 percent of the population was 65 and older. This is higher than the state<br />
of Utah (8.5 percent) but slightly lower than the United States as a whole (12.4 percent), as shown in<br />
Table G-1 (Utah Travel Industry Website).<br />
