PEDESTRIAN CHARACTERISTICS CONSIDERED FOR USE OF PEDESTRIAN COUNTDOWN SIGNALS Respondents indicated that various pedestrian characteristics would serve as criteria for potential consideration of the use of PCD signals. Figure 7 shows the percentage of respondents who listed a particular pedestrian characteristic in making a decision to use the PCD signal device. As shown, “high pedestrian volumes” received the greatest number of responses (more than 57 percent). Just more than 20 percent of respondents indicated that PCD signals would be beneficial for senior or very young pedestrians. Other pedestrian characteristics listed in lower numbers included pedestrian crash history, ethnic diversity, inexperienced users, high pedestrian pushbutton usage, and high bicycle volumes. 51
