Examine levels of marine derived and terrestrially derived nutrients, and macroinvertabrate and fish communities. In riverine ecosystems, there is a need to examine the interactions among abiotic and biotic components throughout the entire basin. The aim is to eliminate or mitigate the causes of degraded ecological processes. A whole system view is required, however, because of the complexity of interactions between the upland and the aquatic environment, as well interactions between species. 30.3. Examine role of climate change in altering ecosystem function and diadromous fish species population dynamics There is a need to assess how the river has changed over time. Ecosystem components that changed with European settlement of the Penobscot basin include: the fish community (introduced non-native species, lost diadromous species), aquatic mammals (otter, beaver), predator-prey complexes (fish, birds, and mammals) in physical habitat, hydrology, and riparian vegetation. Further, the role of climate change in altering ecosystem function and the decline of Atlantic salmon need to be explored, as well as the potential benefit to other species such as striped bass. 30.4. Participate in the Penobscot River Science Steering Committee The Penobscot River Science Steering Committee was organized by the University of Maine’s Mitchell Center and Penobscot River Restoration Trust to organize and oversee scientific research and monitoring related to the restoration project. Members of the fisheries subcommittee include representatives from the Maine Department of Marine Resources, Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, University of Maine, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service. 30.5. Examine the role of connectivity among main stems and tributaries and habitat types (rapids, flat waters, runs, riffles, pools), on productivity The recovery of the Penobscot River for all species needs to be approached holistically.
