at Upper Ebeemee Lake. The Pleasant River enters the Piscataquis River near Milo, Maine. Sanborn Brook originates from a tributary westerly of Sanborn Pond which is located in the same esker valley slightly north of Wangan Brook (Figure 2). Sanborn Brook flows north to Upper Jo-Mary Lake, and eventually drains to Pemadumcook Lake which is a flowage of the West Branch Penobscot including North Twin and South Twin lakes. The terrain separating these two small streams is comprised of a low-relief, forested wetland and mixed conifer forest, and a complex of alder thicket and beaver ponds. A short trough depression has formed a small perennial stream that exits an abandoned beaver dam southward to a connection with Wangan Brook. Another depression extends between a bend in Sanborn Brook southwesterly toward Wangan Brook that could convey water at high flows. 3.0 METHODS Both streams were surveyed the week of May 25, 2009. Maine DIFW provided invaluable guidance on access and locations, including GPS waypoints, especially for the Wangan Brook site (T. Obrey, and Richard Dill, Maine DIFW, personal communication). Wangan Brook was reinvestigated a second time on July 8, 2009 following an extended period of high rainfall which increased water levels through the study site. At each site, the most limiting passage point for migrating fish in the thoroughfare area was located and geo-referenced. Factors such as stream slope, water depth, velocity, presence of any physical obstruction (both vertical and horizontal) were collectively considered to evaluate each limiting passage site. Although the survey occurred in late May, northern pike could be active immediately after ice-out when water levels are significantly higher (and thus hydraulic conditions different). Thus the seasonal high water elevation at each site was also identified and surveyed. Bankfull indicators such as changes in vegetation, leaf and substrate disturbance and bank erosion were collectively used to approximate the elevation of high water. Each site was geo-referenced with a Trimble model Geo XH GPS unit, and a cross- section transect established. Transect data included bed profile elevations, water surface elevations (WSEL's) at the existing stream flow and at estimated bankfull. Lateral survey boundaries of each transect were defined by head- and tailpins established above the crest of each bank. Headpins were located along the right bank (looking downstream). Pins were field- blazed and semi-permanently fixed with either rebar or by using a large tree or other fixed object and then field blazed with flagging and/or survey paint. A 300-ft fiberglass survey tape was secured between headpin and tailpin at each transect. Elevation and edge of water were recorded at intervals (verticals) along the tape. Verticals were established wherever an observable change in profile occurred and/or at locations of special interest such as hydraulic controls. In the case of cribwork, beaver dams etc., water and object elevations were gathered across both the crest and toe of the obstruction. Bed and water surface elevations were surveyed to the nearest 0.01-ft elevation using a surveying level and standard surveying techniques. Each site was also photographed and schematically sketched. 4
